As one who believes strongly in human rights, I must object to this man’s behavior. Slavery is no longer lawful in UK or Israel. What is his explaination for slavery? I suspect this man will not bear the endorsement of his peers.
You think slavery’s okay and Biblically justifiable, or am I just putting words in your mouth?
I am not a fan of slavery, but it is clearly sanctioned in the Bible (with some pretty strict rules. For example, if you cause physical harm to a slave, that slave is automatically freed.)
Moshe come on dude, we were slaves in Egypt, it’s not cool…
Joseph, we are talking about what the Tenach says (and the NT) Are you denying the laws the Torah has on how to treat slaves? What about where Paul in the NT instructs Masters on how to treat their slaves? You are projecting our modern morality into the past. (Not that I am surprised since MJ is just another misguided attempt to revise history.)
Moshe, I’m more than an extension of the Messianic movement, I’m my own person!
I think there are rules given about how to treat slaves, but slavery itself is not encouraged. It was an evangelical Christian from Britain – William Wilberforce – who led the opposition to slavery on the basis of his faith. To be fair, he was also fighting Christians who tried to justify slavery from the Bible too.
You will not find anyplace in the Tenach discouraging slavery.
I was refering to sexual slavery. Thought that was obvious from the context that subject was the rabbi’s misdeeds. How awful to keep a woman captive for sex. That dishonors God and is a great sin.
Now the OT does endorse slavery with rights for slaves. There is a rule for female captives but that is not sex slavery.
I believe we could still allow slavery is it were voluntary. Some humans mess up their lives so badly on their own that slavery may be an option. Just my off-topic opinion.
We actually have something like that now for drug addicts in rehab… half-way houses etc. with regimentation. The goal is independence, not perpetual slavery and the beneficiary of the system is the recovering addict more so than the rehab house. That is about as close as we come to voluntary slavery.
I guess when you said that ‘Slavery is no longer lawful in UK’ that you meant regular slavery, I was not aware that sexual slavery was allowed in England at one time.
Sadly yes. In the so-called Christian middle ages you could buy and sell both adults and children for sexual purposes. Ever hear of blood libel? I think they may be related as one could buy a child to harm. Most people don’t know that.
Christians started the social movement to provide for the poor and orphans in the UK. Check the story of George Mueller online. Also one of the famous evangelists (who?) tried to reverse the legal slavery by buying a boy in protest, but somehow got arrested himself. It all turned out ok and England became safe to be poor and orphaned thanks to the ministrations of these fine and dedicated men and women of God. Show mercy. Liberate captives.
Ken, I know about the ‘blood libel’ and it had nothing to do with slavery. But then, of course, it was not your ancestors who were being accused.

Never read the Old Testament? Or the New for that matter.
