John Piper Promotes Rick Warren at Desiring God 2010

Here is John Piper justifying his decision to invite Rick Warren to the 2010 Desiring God conference:

Piper is shooting this video after having spoken to Warren on the phone, and sounds convinced. Piper says:

“I’m gonna need help to know why I should feel bad about this decision.”

Piper claims that Warren:

  1. rejects the emergent church
  2. memorises Scripture every week
  3. preaches for an hour
  4. doesn’t do any drama in worship
  5. plants a church a year
  6. rejects the prosperity gospel
  7. has zero faith in politics

Firstly, taking Rick Warren at his word is no easy task.

Have a look at this video on how Warren has angered both sides of the homosexuality debate. Warren’s utter hypocrisy is enough to make any man marvel – surely Piper is aware of this?

Piper claims Warren believes in salvation only in Jesus Christ – how does he explain Warren’s comment that it takes “more than faith” to be saved? And Warren’s comments about the “test” God sets every believer?

If Warren rejects the emerging church as Piper claims, how does one explain Warren’s apparent associations with the Emergent Church via Peter Drucker?

Warren may memorise Scripture and preach for an hour, but so what – even Satan has memorised Scripture, as we see in Luke 4!

Piper claims Warren doesn’t “do drama in worship” – how does he explain Warren’s dramatic and badly thought-out comparison between young Christian devotees of Jesus and the Hitler Youth?

Piper claims Warren rejects the prosperity gospel and plants a church a year, yet Warren has both counselled Reform Jewish leaders on how to make their synagogues grow and told practicioners of Judaism they are going to Hell –  well, which is it? How can Warren avoid the charges of hypocrisy and opportunism? Of what real value is a church that follows Warren’s model?

Piper claims that Warren sees no value in politics, and doesn’t get involved – if that’s the case then why is Warren going on a political show to discuss politics and directly speaking about President Obama’s policies?

Piper says that he doesn’t want to be ‘separatist’ or treat Warren as an enemy, yet refusing to share a platform with Warren is hardly being deliberately bellicose. Piper himself has written polemics against N.T. Wright – surely of all people he understands that opposing someone’s ideas and standing up for the truth is not ‘separatist’?

Piper claims Warren’s discipling is ‘transformative’, and claims that Warren puts him to shame. Piper says that Warren disciplines people in his church – why then did Warren not discipline porn baron Rupert Murdoch, who is closely connected with his church?

Piper says at the end of the video “I hope we can disagree over who we can hang out with”.

Indeed we can.

  1. Dear Director of Roshpina Project,

Thank you for posting your demolition of John Piper and shredding his excuses for bringing Rick Warren to his church to defile his pulpit and people.

I can only hope and pray that he is simply not aware of the following expose and warning, regarding Rick Warren.

I have written two books exposing Rick Warren. Southwest Radio has released my two speeches on Rick Warren on DVD and just reprinted my book exposing his global peace plan.

I give you my highest commendation for actively opposing John Piper for inviting Rick Warren from speaking at this conference.

    Kindest regards in Christ,

Southwest Radio Ministries and Rock Salt Publishing announce the release of award-winning author and producer, James Sundquist’s new DVD entitled: Who’s Driving the Purpose Driven Church?, based on his two books entitled Who’s Driving the Purpose Driven Church?, one of Southwest Radio Ministries’ best sellers (several printings and now translated into Chinese by Dr. Christian Wei) and Rick Warren’s Global Peace Plan vs. Scriptural Teachings on Peace. It features his speeches at Southwest Radio’s Prophecy Conference and updated PowerPoint Presentation color charts with the latest news, new links and resources. This presentation has already been used around the world to help equip and counsel churches and countries which have been hijacked by Warren’s Purpose Driven and Global Peace Plan programs, be set free. The documentary includes the expose of Warren’s evolution/occult-based Carl Jung personality profiling and forced covenants, which in true Big Brother style has been imposed on church members, was also published in two Conservative Christian Theological Journals:

Journal of Biblical Apologetics (Fall 2007) and The Conservative Theological Journal (Aug 2005 and Dec 2005).

James Sundquist was the featured guest on Watchman on the Wall national radio show on October 19 and 20, 2009, also archived online at:

In Parts I and II he will also discuss Warren’s blessing of President Obama and his newest articles on Obama and Warren:

President Barack Obama: Immaculate Deception, High Priest of Molech & Darwin

University of Oregon: Friend of Darwin, Enemy of the Gospel; Death is our Friend we have forever vs. Death is the Last Enemy to be Destroyed

I also HIGHLY recommend Lord Christopher Monckton’s October 15, 2009 Speech at Bethel College which you can hear and see at:

Obama Poised to Cede US Sovereignty
    God’s version of Global Warming:

“The first angel sounded, and there followed hail and fire mingled with blood, and they were cast upon the earth: and the third part of trees was burnt up, and all green grass was burnt up.” Revelation 8:7

  2. I believe your critique is quite fair and I like the way you backed it up with references. There’s also another reference that is somewhat related and that’s the impact Warren has made on thousands of congregations that have been split up by the purpose driven model. Wall Street Journal did a report on it.

thanks again and God bless you.

    1. From the article you provided a link to:

Mr. Warren acknowledges that splits occur in congregations that adopt his ideas, though he says he opposes efforts to expel church members.

He seems very nonchalant about it.

  3. Interesting interview here with Bob deWaay, mentioning Rick Warren and Synagogue 3000:
